Bikes made by BMW have a long tradition. The German company started making motor-cycles in 1923. Soon BMW was regarded a pioneer of the technological evolution and pushed the boundaries of the possible further. In 1937 BMW set up the speed record for motorcycle, breathtaking 280 km/h and created through this a legacy of highly competitive motorcycles. During World War 2 BMW produced the famous R75 a powerful and reliable motor-cycle for all terrain. After the war BMW started to rebuild its business. The developers and the factories were in Eastern Germany of the territory of the later GDR. Thus, BMW had to create a complete new production line and R&D department. However, even with all these problems, BMW rose like a phoenix from the ashes and was selling high-quality motorcycle soon after. The next milestone in the history of BMW Motorrad was the new factory in West-Berlin in 1972. With this new high-capacity factory BMW had now a state of the art production-line and was able to hold market shares against the completion from Japan. BMW had now the economic success and the capacity to develop a broad variety of different motorcycles under its brand.
